Enrolled Agents (EA)
Enrolled agents are practitioners empowered and licensed by the federal government to prepare taxes and represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the Internal Revenue Service for audits, collections and appeals. EAs must abide by Treasury Department Circular 230 and are the only taxpayer representatives who obtain their license to practice from the federal government. Unlike attorneys and CPAs, who may or may not specialize in taxes, all EAs specialize in taxation.
The National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) is the nonprofit membership association supporting America’s tax experts. Although all EAs are required to complete 72 hours of continuing professional education in each three-year enrollment cycle, members of NAEA must go beyond the IRS requirement and complete 90 hours in the same time period. Currently, there are more than 87,000 “active status” EAs.
